The Lützow Cost-free Corps, composed of volunteer German learners and lecturers fighting from Napoleon in 1813, could not afford to produce special uniforms and thus adopted black, as the only color that could be used to dye their civilian apparel without the initial colour displaying. In 1815 the students began to carry a crimson, black and gold
